MIND-BODY PROBLEM

Interaction of the Mind and Body
I. Dualistic Interactionism/Dualism: mind and body are different kinds of substances, and they causally affect one another.

II. Parallelism/Pre-established Harmony: mind and body are different kinds substances, but there is no causal interaction between the two. God just makes them work simultaneously.

  • Occassionalism: God did not establish perfect harmony between mind and body at the beginning, but as the occasion arises, he makes sure that they work simultaneously.

III. Epiphenomenalism: mental states are only a by-product of certain material processes, so the mind does not affect the body.

Nature/Existence of the Mind and Body
I. Dualistic Interactionism/Dualism: mind and body are different kinds of substances, and they causally affect one another.

II. Panpsychism: there exists both mental substances (mind) and material substances (body), but mental properties pervade all things including material substances. All matter is conscious.

III. Idealism: only mind exist

IV. Materialism/Physicalism: only material things exist

  • Eliminative Materialism: mental states do not exist
  • Reductive Materialism (Identity Theory): mental states are identical to brain states. Everything that exists is ultimately material.

V. Neutral Identity Theory/Dual Aspect Theory: mental states have both material and mental properties
